a good way to get some iron in is using nettles. you may be familiar with nettle tea, which i drink mixed with red raspberry leaf tea (both dried leaves). its a good tea for kids, adding cat nip, chamomile and calendula for a calming blend on top of the minerals and iron you're giving them!
in the spring, fresh stinging nettles are good to use in soups, stews, pesto... you should boil them to get the stings off, i usually just blend equal bunches of kale, basil, and fresh nettles with several cloves of garlic, and add the olive oil as its pulsing in the food processor. sea salt and cracked pepper, you can use walnuts, cashews, pine nuts, whatever you want as a nutty texture. i omit cheese but you can use this in here too. sometimes i add truffle oil as my oldest loves it! this usually is great raw as it does cook some when you add it to anything warm ( some good ideas, shrimp, chicken, zucchini and squash noodles) but because of the nettles i simmer for a bit. pesto is good to make in big batches for freezing. like salsa, this is a very good pack of flavor when you don't feel like cooking.
